220kV Hard Tee Connection - Line Deviation - Grid Injection Point - Double Circuit - From Concept to Construction

220kV Line Diversion to Substation - From Concept to Construction

After a series of cable faults in a grid upgrade project, a temporary line diversion of the existing line to a substation was identified as the only practical mitigation option due to security concerns. The project had a very short timeline because of the urgent need for cable repairs, so the scope was developed progressively as needs became clear.

General Scope:

  • Site Visit for Line Route Selection.

  • Identify the optimal route to connect the line to the substation, considering multiple options in PLS-CADD.

  • Minimize the number of affected landowners in the route selection.

  • Pole Centre Peg Site Visit

  • Construct a new gantry bay in the substation for the line connection.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders (property, environmental, ecological, Iwi, etc.) and provide necessary information for project progression.

  • Utilize a 220kV duplex Zebra ACSR line.

  • Employ standard pole suite and available stock where possible by using PLS-POLE.

  • Finalize pole procurement within one week of project kick-off to meet delivery timelines.

  • Arrange and obtain a ground survey for the proposed line area.

  • Ensure the deviation line can connect and switch between either circuit of the line.

  • Install twin 7/3.71 SC/AC earthwires for at least 1km from the substation.

  • Avoid strain converting on line tower if possible.

  • Gather necessary geotechnical information.

  • Produce Detailed Design Implementation Report (DIR)

  • As-build Construction Works.

220kV Reconductoring in Urban Areas - Thermal Upgrade - From Concept to Construction - Engineering Excellence Awards Project

Reconductoring design of 220kV lines and upgrade to existing Goat ACSR/GZ at 75° maximum operating temperature from Curlew ACSR/TWAC at 54°C. Both lines sections are located in urban areas with large amounts of residential underbuild, undercrossing distribution lines and road crossings, including four major road crossings in each line.

General Scope:

  • Creating A Design Criteria Document.

  • Strain Conversion Design of Suspension Structures.

  • 3 Parallel Body Extension Design to mitigage the external clearances.

  • Floating Strain Conversion of Suspension Structures.

  • Strengthening Design on Existing Structures.

  • Strain Plate replacement Design.

  • Foundation Strengthening Design.

  • Cable Catenary Support System Design.

  • Structural loading assessment in PLS-TOWER.

  • Populate PLS-CADD model with site-specific towers.

  • Update standard insulator set drawings with Curlew components.

  • Produce required electrical clearance diagrams.

  • Produce earthworks rectification drawing.

  • Foundation design assessment.

  • Produce construction packages for enabling works construction.

  • Produce Detailed Design Implementation Report (DIR).

  • As-build Enabling Works Construction.
